About

Made by the people in it.

The Upskilling Labs is free workshops and team projects at your local public library, made by volunteers and open to anyone. It's run in the open, and what works is shared with every Lab.

Our story

It started at the library.

In fall 2025, DC Public Library and Levy, a strategic design firm, ran a pilot for about fifty former federal workers working out their next move: career change, new tools, and a team to do it with.

The people who came through that pilot founded The Upskilling Labs in January 2026, so that what they'd found could be open to anyone. The DC Lab still meets at DC Public Library, and more cities are gathering names.

What a Lab makes stays open: the workshops, the guides, the way a Build Cycle runs and the platform it runs on are all built in public, and the best of it goes to every Lab that comes next.

What we believe

Work is changing too fast to figure out alone.

How it's run

In the open, by volunteers.

Who we work with

Libraries, employers and governments.

Every Lab lives in a public library. Employers run Build Cycles inside and lend their experts. Governments fund and adopt what works. Each starts with a conversation.
